They had a legacy of losing and a mentality that they couldn't win a tournament. I do think that Torres and Villa are better forwards in that they can create their own shot. I still think Raul is a better team player and leader.

I also think that Spain's success is largely due to their incredible midfield and their ability to control the ball as opposed to the replacing Raul. Of course, you can't undervalue Villa and his incredible performance this past summer. But again, Raul didn't have that midfield at his disposal like Villa.kenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16098859339378214092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5620454651611218284.post-85699514056062679262010-09-23T21:05:51.395-07:002010-09-23T21:05:51.395-07:00Raul Gonzalez Blanco.....the best "be in the ...Raul Gonzalez Blanco.....the best "be in the right place at the right time" forward in La Liga history.

If Raul was such a superstar, why did Spain not win anything until they dumped Raul, and inserted real forwards Torres and Villa.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5620454651611218284.post-85991299940330002492010-09-16T17:34:02.520-07:002010-09-16T17:34:02.520-07:00By darkside, I mean that Beckham left his life as ...By darkside, I mean that Beckham left his life as a footballer first and moved to a life as a model and global icon and a footballer as well. Granted, it's not the club with the best reputation, but it's not like you are completely switching alliances when you go from Man U to Real Madrid. Man U isn't exactly a knight in shining armor. They may think they are, but to outside audiences they too are an evil empire. Ronaldo didn't become evil because he went to Madrid, he was already evil and Madrid sought him out because they recognized him as one of their own.

Speaking of evil, C. Ronaldo is off his game because he is cursed. He is no longer CR-9 as he has changed to the #7 jersey. That jersey was formerly worn by Raul for the past 14 years. You bring up some good points at the beginning.

It's interesting though the point that the MLS teams try hard to prove to the Euros that they can play. That is undoubtedly true. The Euros don't really care too much about these games - especially the starters who usually don't play the entire game. But the bench guys and players that do have a lot to prove to the coaches see a decent amount of playing time on these marketing tours. One would think that they would be playing as hard as they could and trying to take advantage of every opportunity they get on the field. Could you argue that the MLS is as good as the bench players for the Euro clubs? I actually don't know if I would go there, but I do agree that the talent gap isn't massive, or as big as most people think. I think a decent amount of the MLS players could probably get on with clubs in lesser leagues in Europe.

I also wonder how much the MLS game improves by playing against better competition. Against better competition you either get blown away or elevate yourself to their level. I think the Euro clubs probably come down a bit on their quality of play and the MLS teams raise their play level a bit. If only these MLS teams could play against the Euro clubs more often, instead they are left playing each other week in and week out. I wonder how much an MLS team would improve if they were in the Premier League for an entire season. Would they even win a game? I would think so. They couldn't do any worse than the teams that get relegated each year, right?

Anyways, it is all interesting to ponder. I think the MLS is getting better and gaining some credibility. Hopefully they can become a good feeder league or more of an option for players that are just past their prime but still want to compete. Until they get a larger revenue stream and start selling out stadiums, I think that is the best they can hope for.kenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16098859339378214092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5620454651611218284.post-23414926550392001162010-07-23T11:58:43.379-07:002010-07-23T11:58:43.379-07:00Haha. We'll see how things turn out, but I think he will do well in the MLS. He's still a very good striker. Better then everyone else in the MLS, just not good enough to be at the top clubs in the Euro leagues. I think he will score goals and gain interest and recognition because of it. Beckham doesn't score goals and he's never been a goal scorer. So his popularity and interest off the field doesn't really translate for non-soccer fans into watching him play. I don't think Henry has nearly the amount of interest off the field as Beckham, but he definitely attracts casual fans and if they see him constantly convert and score goals on the field, I think his impact on the MLS will be much greater than Beckham or any other player.kenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16098859339378214092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5620454651611218284.post-807894343561244002010-07-23T11:30:27.973-07:002010-07-23T11:30:27.973-07:00I love the body language, the hosts are like falli...I love the body language, the hosts are like falling out of their seats yelling questions at him before he can finish one and he is leaning back as far away as he can.Always Summerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15483499144612165228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5620454651611218284.post-66928356059575058672010-07-22T22:09:17.870-07:002010-07-22T22:09:17.870-07:00Wow, what an interview. Spain has been playing well and winning with style and control. Torres is steadily improving and he has not had a disappointing cup other than not finding the back of the net... yet. (I would not characterize Messi's cup as a failure just because he didn't score--he facilitated almost all the goals for Argentina)

Bottom line, Pedro was put in to score because Torres has not been scoring. Not only did Pedro fail to score, but he blew a crucial play that could have really blown it for Spain. If Germany would have scored a late goal, I think they would have gone on to win that match--the last few minutes were pretty sketchy for Spain. All Spain fans reaching for their blood pressure medication those last few minutes can thank Pedro and his selfish and idiotic decision.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11398036798062132396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5620454651611218284.post-24066240632903272512010-07-07T15:28:43.895-07:002010-07-07T15:28:43.895-07:00I agree it was despicable. Even though he's been off his game a little, at that spot on the field, having a one on one with the goalie, it's practically a guaranteed goal if he passes the ball.

I'm still torn on the not starting part. Torres has been a little off so I find it hard to blame the coach for trying something different and trying to mix it up. It's also hard because Spain won, so in a sense you can't really say the coach made a bad move. But I would rather see Torres on the field and I don't know that Pedro specifically was the difference-maker out there for Spain. I still think Torres should start and bring in Pedro off the bench.

Have you been hearing about the Torres to Chelsea rumors? Would you still love him then? I'd rather he go to a different team, but I'll still root for him. The penalty for a hand ball on the goal line is a red card and a PK--a gimmie goal. Additionally, the player is sent off, the team must play short and the player is unable to play the next game. It doesn't matter if it happens in the 2nd minute, the 30th minute, or the last minute. The ESPN commentators basically said that Suarez' actions are no more immoral or cheap than the player who tackles too hard, obstructs a runner, or grabs a jersey or arm.

There are referees on the field for a reason. Ghana needs to just make the gimmie goal. End of story.

Suarez isn't a cheater and he's not immoral. Given the chance, I would have done the same thing and so would almost every player out there.

--As a side note, even if it is of no condolence to Ghana, the absence of Suarez had a massive impact on Uruguay losing out to the Netherlands today. Therefore, like it or not... the red card was an effective punishment for the crime. Ghana only has itself to blame for not putting the ball into an goal 8 yards wide, from 12 yards away.

*Cliff's Notes is likely a poor reference as I'm quite sure google has killed that once budding tool for the lazy and unmotivated. I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank Cliff's Notes for getting my lazy and unmotivated butt through AP English in high school.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11398036798062132396noreply@blogger.com
