What is this you ask? I am often asked who the current best player in the world is right now. Multiple factors must be considered. How do you rank a player? By his goals? His assists? His armband? So, I put together a little list of great players. Based on current stats, past performances, likability, and personal opinion, here are the finalists:

ReplyDelete(I removed this post to add a few things that I wanted to make clear and am reposting it again.) I found a common thread (in all sports) with the players I really like vs the players I respect and like to watch are the impact they have for their club. However, most that fit in category 2 I don’t think I would want them on my team.
ReplyDeleteForgive me if I sound old fashion, but it’s becoming rare to find “team” players anymore these days. With the high profile image, fast car, big home, model girlfriend, and FAT contract, it’s clearly not just about the love of the game anymore.
I give myself credit for the saying there "there is no I in team, but there are 2 in Christiano." I'm not going to debate the fact the man has talent. I've even heard people say things like if you could create a "perfect" or "ideal" soccer body combine with talent, you pretty much would make a Christiano Ronaldo. However, note the man has no assists. Sure watching him is fun, no doubt about that. I joke that his mentality and ego are such that I don't think he ever thinks he won't score every time he touches the ball. He kind of reminds me of this new commercial on TV I saw the other day. It's a video game for the NBA 2K10 game. Kobe Bryant pretty much takes on everyone, including the soda guy. (see link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ_jXp1KOHI ).
What this MLW list is for me is a great reflection on how the player views this “team” concept. Note the 2 Arsenal and 3 Barca players both are very balanced (Xabi the exception, but come on he is probably one of the best at creating opportunities for everyone around him) in the Assist to Goal ratio. On the contrast note players like Rooney, Ronaldo, Villa, Torres with just a bunch of goals, it seems very one sided. (All have, fast cars, hot girlfriends, great hair (not Rooney), big contracts, and the me syndrome). In their defense, they are strikers and get paid the big contracts to do just that SCORE. I also should disclaim that I have not watched all the goals scored this year by these players, so I don’t know the situations that created the opportunity to score.
My point in all this is a true MLW is what they bring to the club as a whole. Ronaldo does bring a whole lot of talent on the pitch, I'm not denying that, but does he make others around him perform at their maximum level and create synergy or as my favorite past Real Madrid coachs (Capello) would say "Euphoria". With that much ego, I don't think so… At least not like what Cesc does for his team.
